What is a D.O.?

A D.O. is a doctor of osteopathy or osteopathic physician. This type of medical training emphasizes practicing "whole body" medicine, believing that the body's parts are interconnected and influence each other, rather than just treating a specific illness or symptom. Patients are educated on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent illness and injury. Osteopathic physicians are fully qualified physicians who are licensed to prescribe medication and perform surgery. They receive four years of medical school training, complete internship, residency, and fellowship programs allowing them to practice in any medical specialty, and pass state licensure examinations.
